Ambassador’s Remarks at the start of Holi Celebrations at Indian Embassy, Budapest
14 March 2026
Distinguished guests, members of the Indian diaspora, and dear friends of India,
Namaskar, Jó estét kívánok, and a very warm welcome to the Amrita Sher-Gil Cultural Centre.
Today, we gather to celebrate Holi—the magnificent festival of colors, love, and the vibrant arrival of spring. Just as a well-crafted stanza brings rhythm to a page, Holi brings rhythm to our lives. It washes away the dormant grey of winter and paints our world with unapologetic hues, celebrating the triumph of light over dark and the renewal of hope.
Interestingly, the essence of Holi finds a beautiful, resonant echo right here in Hungary. Just as Hungarians chase away the winter cold during Farsang, and celebrate the blossoming of spring with the playful water-sprinkling traditions of locsolkodás, Indians celebrate Holi by washing away the past with vibrant colors and joyful splashes of water. It is a beautiful reminder that across thousands of miles, our human hearts beat to the exact same rhythm of welcoming the light and celebrating life.
This shared spirit of joy and mutual respect is the very foundation of the India-Hungary relationship. It is a partnership defined by forward momentum and a remarkable absence of friction. From thriving economic investments and expanding trade to the deep Hungarian appreciation for Indian art, culture, and philosophy, our ties are stronger than ever. It is only fitting we celebrate this bond here, in a centre named after Amrita Sher-Gil—the ultimate bridge between our two heritages.
That same boundless energy of renewal we celebrate today is currently transforming India on a monumental scale. Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is undergoing a sweeping renaissance. We are making a quantum leap in digital innovation, space exploration, world-class infrastructure, and sustainable energy.
Fuelled by the aspirations of 1.5 billion people, we are marching decisively toward Viksit Bharat—a fully developed India by 2047. Yet, what makes this transformation truly remarkable is that as we calculate the mechanics of our modern, rapid growth, we remain deeply anchored in the legacy of our ancient civilization. We are building the future while fiercely protecting the rich soil of our heritage.
This afternoon is your invitation to experience a living, breathing piece of that heritage.
I ask you to leave your formalities at the door. Immerse yourselves in the spectacular Indian music and dance performances our artists have prepared. Savor the rich, diverse flavors of the Indian cuisine we have laid out. And, most importantly, embrace the playful joy of the colors. Let us celebrate the vibrant canvas of our friendship.
May the festival of Holi bring new energy, boundless joy, and the brightest of colors to you and your families.
Thank you. Köszönöm szépen. Happy Holi!
