ADVISORY FOR INDIAN NATIONALS IN HUNGARY

Precautions Regarding the Ongoing Heatwave and Energy Conservation

The Embassy of India in Budapest is closely monitoring the severe heatwave across Hungary and the consequent record-low water levels in the Danube River. We are aware of the statements by Hungarian authorities regarding the operational challenges this poses to the national energy grid, particularly the anticipated temporary scaling down or shutdown of a Power Plant. 

The Hungarian Government has activated robust contingency measures, including coordinated industrial energy reductions and cross-border electricity imports, to manage the situation and stabilize the grid. There is no cause for alarm or panic. The situation is being proactively managed by local authorities. 

As a measure of abundant caution, and to support the Hungarian government's efforts during this exceptional weather event, the Embassy advises all Indian nationals residing in or visiting Hungary to observe the following guidelines: 

1. Support Energy Conservation

• Observe Peak Hours: Please voluntarily reduce non-essential electricity consumption during the peak evening hours of 17:00 to 22:00. 

• Optimize Appliances: Minimize the use of heavy electrical appliances. Set air conditioning to a moderate, energy-efficient level. 

• Unplug: Ensure lights and electronic devices are turned off when not in active use. 

2. Health and Safety

• Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day. 

• Avoid Peak Heat: Limit outdoor physical activities during the hottest parts of the day.

• Vulnerable Individuals: Pay special attention to the elderly, young children, and those with pre-existing health conditions, ensuring they remain in cool environments. 

3. Preparedness and Travel

• Prepare for Disruptions: Be prepared for potential localized power fluctuations. Keep mobile phones charged and maintain a basic supply of drinking water. 

• Commute: Low water levels on the Danube have disrupted river navigation and ferries. Check your routes and rely on official public transport updates, as extreme heat can occasionally delay rail or tram networks. 

4. Stay Informed

• Follow the instructions and advisory issued by Hungarian authorities.
• Rely exclusively on official advisories from the Hungarian National Directorate General for Disaster Management (Katasztrófavédelem) and local municipal authorities. Avoid spreading unverified information or rumours on social media. 

The Embassy remains in constant touch with relevant Hungarian authorities and will provide updates if the situation warrants.
