A nyugaton mindmáig legismertebb indiai rendező utolsó filmje ez a klasszikus egyszerűségű és ezért szinte időtlennek ható, filozofikus kamaradráma, amelynek központi kérdése, hogy közönséges szélhámos-e vagy valóban a feleség közel negyven éve külföldön élő anyai nagybátyja az a megfáradt idős ember, aki átutazóban egy hétre megszáll a tehetős kalkuttai polgárcsaládnál – és alaposan meglepi őket és a nézőt. Aligha belemagyarázás a látogatót a szívbaja miatt a külső forgatástól is eltiltott Ray alteregójának tekinteni, akinek hattyúdala végrendeletszerű üzenet az emberiségnek a bizalomról és az élet értelméről. Az 1992-es Indiai Nemzeti Filmgálán a film elnyerte a legjobb játékfilmért és a legjobb rendezésért járó díjat, Mamata Shankar pedig megkapta a zsűri különdíját Anila megformálásáért.

Satyajit Ray’s valedictory film is a multifaceted character study that contains both humor and melancholy rumination. Based on the filmmaker’s own story, The Stranger involves a bourgeois couple who are taken off guard when a man claiming to be the wife’s long-lost uncle sends word that he will be coming to stay with them after years of travel. Though they fear he’s an impostor, they tentatively let the man into their home, commencing an eye-opening emotional journey for the family. At the 1992 Indian National Film Awards, Agantuk won the awards for Best Feature Film and Best Directing, and the Special Jury Award went to Mamata Shankar for her portrayal of Anila.
