The Embassy of India celebrated 71stRepublic Day of India on 26 January 2020 in Budapest. The celebrations began with Ambassador of India Mr. Kumar Tuhin hoisting the Indian Tricolour at the Embassy premises in the morning and the singing of National Anthem by everyone.Thereafter, Ambassador read the addressto the Nation by the President of India, which was followed by a cultural programme by the members of the Indian community and the artists from the Amrita Shergil Cultural Centre. The programme was organised with a lot of enthusiasm and gaiety and a large number of Indian community members in Hungary attended including many persons who travelled from outside of Budapest.

In the evening, a grand reception was held which was attended by senior Hungarian officials from different ministries and institutions, Ambassadors and members of the diplomatic corps, Indian diaspora as well as media persons. Speaking at the occasion, Ambassador Kumar Tuhin, inter alia, mentioned about the recent developments in bilateral relations between India and Hungary, especially, highlighting the recent visits of ministers of external affairs and water resources to Hungary and the visit of Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade to India. He mentioned that these visits had further expanded the foundation for cooperation between the two countries. Bilateral trade and investment ties were healthy and some Indian companies had made large investments in Hungary during the last few years. Also, during thelast year, the Embassy of India had organised a series of activities to celebrate the 70thanniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations as well as the 150thbirth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. These activities had further consolidated people-to-people ties.

Deputy State Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary, Mr. AndrasBaranyi, who was the Chief Guest, in his remarks at the occasion concurred with the Ambassador that bilateral ties were strong and close. He remarked that the Indian companies had invested over two billion US dollars in Hungary which had given employment to around 10,000 Hungarians. He added that in his assessment the bilateral relations would see rapid consolidation in future because of the efforts being made by the two sides. After the address by the Ambassador and the Chief Guest, a cultural programme by Indian and Hungarian artists was performed showcasing a brilliant and colourful fusion of different rhythms, melodies and dance forms from India as well as Yoga and a live painting of two national flowers of India and Hungary, viz. Lotus and Tulip, on a canvass. The programme left the audience spellbound. The guests then enjoyed a sumptuousdinnerof Indian delicacies.
